With the North Sea on one side and the Baltic Sea on the other, Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost German state. Inland, the landscape of lakes, beech forests and farmland gives way to marshes and dunes along the coast. Manor houses, country estates and farmhouses are set in these quiet green areas.
From the Netherlands it is a long drive, and the car is the most practical way to reach the coast and the lakes of Holstein. Hamburg is the main rail gateway, and regional trains continue from there to Kiel and Lübeck. The trip can be split via Hamburg, with the last stretch by car.
